Walkways, paths and plantings

“The path and entrance to a house can determine how much a house feels like an inner sanctum, like an inviting shelter. A good entrance creates a feeling of a private domain, a world apart” Christopher Alexander, et al – A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction

For the most part, your home’s architecture establishes the dominant mood of your property, including its pathways and landscape features.

Once we establish the main path or walkway materials and location, the subsequent landscape design falls into place, and design problems are easier to solve. A well-designed pathway breaks each element into related parts, defining spaces and creating areas that can be treated in different ways. Pathways present locations for plantings, naturalized areas, and landscape features.

Pathways and walks might lead from your front door to a gate at the sidewalk, or lead to a private sitting area surrounded by gardens, and we take a pathway’s purpose and surroundings into account when suggesting form and materials. For example, “jumbo flagstone”, shown below as a pool surround, can give a solid, imposing look to walkways and paths when the scale warrants it.

We hope these photos of walkways and plantings inspire you with ideas for your own home’s landscaping.
