Retaining walls and steps needn’t simply be functional. They can also be dramatic, attractive features of your landscapes.
The most challenging sites to landscape are invariably flat. Grade changes allow for added dimension and spaces in the landscape, inviting the introduction of natural wall and step materials – a such as granite, limestone, and armour stone – which add both interest and function.
Your home’s architecture and setting will dictate retaining materials and design. In the hills and on the Niagara Escarpment, limestone is often the material of choice, since it’s what you’d naturally find in that location. Closer to the water, granite might be more appropriate. And the regularity of armour stone, which is quarried stone of specific sizes, lends itself well to stacking and designing into retaining walls.
A more formal feel might be accomplished with geometric masonry walls and cut steps, while a rustic setting would lend itself to natural boulder retaining with irregular slab steps.
